SOUTH AFRICAN SHELDUCK (Tadorna cana)

The South African Shelduck, also known as the Cape Shelduck, is a member of the duck, goose and swan family Anatidae and is classed as a Shelduck.

The South African Shelduck breeds in Southern Africa, mainly in Namibia.

The South African Shelduck is one of the birds to which the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds applies.

Size
640mm (25")

Appearance - Male
The male has a Grey head and upper neck, a Black bill, a Buff lower neck and breast. The body is Chestnut Brown with Black with White and Green wings. The legs and feet are dark Grey.

Appearance - Female
The female is similar to the male except it has a White face with dark Brown head and neck.

Habitat
Wetlands, Lakes, Rivers, Ponds and Grasslands.

Diet
Aquatic Plants, Insects, Grasses, Grain, Algae, Worms, small Fish and Crustaceans.

Breeding Time
April to September.

Nest
The nest is built in sand dunes, Aardvark burrows, or rough ground.

Eggs
Quantity: 6 to 15
Colour: Dull White.
